Heavy Letter Mail Warning

Return to News Items June 28, 2007

Heavy letter mail - it's just what it sounds like. Letter-sized mail that is heavy. When the new rate increases and postal rate restructuring took effect, so did a new ruling on heavy letter mail.

Rule 1: Heavy letter mail weighing more than three ounces must have a barcode in the address block. (Note to our clients: don't worry - the mail piece will have a barcode)

Rule 2: Heavy letter mail weighing more than three ounces must be in a sealed envelope.

Rule 3: Heavy letter mail cannot contain stiff enclosures nor be prepared as a self-mailer or booklet-type mailpiece.

And if your letter weighs more than 3.5 ounces, it will mail as a flat.
