New Addressing Standards for Flats

Return to News Items August 25, 2009

The new address standards for commercial flat-size mail became effective on March 29, 2009. The standards require mailers to place delivery addresses in the top half of all Periodicals, Standard Mail, and Package Services flats mailed at any discount. Flat mail includes anything larger than 6 1/8 x 11, items thicker than .25 inches, square mailers, or those failing aspect ratio.

Because flat mail varies in size and does not have a uniform address location, the USPS says the new standards will assist in its implementation of the new Flats Sequencing System, which will sort flat-sized mail into delivery sequence, reducing carriers' time spent sorting mail.

Take a look at your flat mailpieces now and make the appropriate adjustments. If you're not sure whether your mail piece is compliant, just give us a call. We'll be happy to help.
