Are You Ready for Move Update?

Return to News Items June 17, 2008

If you mail Standard of Nonprofit mail, listen up. Move update is coming.

On November 23, 2008, new Move Update standards will take effect. Aimed at reducing the number of mailpieces that require forwarding, return or thrown away, you must be able to prove you updated your list some time during the previous 95 days.

But don't panic! There are many ways to comply, including:

  1. NCOALink processing
  2. OneCode Address Change Service, in conjunction with an Intelligent Mail barcode and business entity ID
  3. Address Change Service used with an ACS participant code and appropriate on-piece ancillary service endorsement
  4. An appropriate on-piece ancillary service endorsement without ACS
  5. Mailpieces addressed to "Resident," or Using "Or Current Resident" after the name

Beginning in late August, (90 days ahead of the deadline) we'll begin asking you which of these methods you'd like to use. Just let us know - we'll make sure you're in comliance!

Frequently Asked Questions About Move Update

Q: Must entire lists be updated each time updating is done?

A: No. The update requirement applies to individual addresses, not entire lists. Only those addresses that will be used in a mailing need to meet the Move Update requirement. If part of the list being mailed to was not updated within 95 days of mailing, the list cannot be used with just an ancillary service endorsement. You would need to use NCOALink.

Q: Can I use an ancillary service endorsement like "Change Service Requested" on November 23?

A: No. An ancillary service endorsement does not - by itself - satisfy the standard. You have to have used it on the list before a mailing on November 23.

Q: I typically rent mailing lists. Since these addresses are new (to me), do I still need to update the list?

A: Yes, you do. You'll need to use NCOALink before mailing. But be sure to check with your list broker - they might be using NCOALink on their lists - if that's the case, they should provide you with a form certifying that the list has been updated.
