Texas and Illinois Top List of Possible USPS Closures

Return to News Items August 11, 2011

The USPS is evaluating 3,652 post offices, stations and branches for possible closure, about 11 percent of its retail network. Texas, Illinois and Pennsylvania top the list of states with the most possible closures. Delaware is the only state with no facilities on the list.

The sites are considered "low activity sites," and fall into four groups:

  1. Less than $27,500 in annual revenue; less than 2 hours of workload daily;
  2. Less than $600,000 in annual revenue; 5 or more access points within 2 miles;
  3. Less than $1 million in annual revenue; 5 or more access points within .5 miles;
  4. Offices that are currently suspended.

To cover the postal needs of these areas, the USPS is looking at partnering with local businesses that could offer postal services on the side. This idea has been met with some resistance from politicians, postal labor unions and citizens who like their post offices.

It Takes a Village

One of the ideas the USPS is floating is its "Village Post Office" concept. Local businesses such as grocery stores and pharmacies would offer postal products such as stamps and flat-rate packaging. The USPS claims the idea would "preserve a postal presence" while supporting small business. Community identity would be preserved by keeping the same place name and ZIP code that was assigned to the former post office.
